When viewing this photo of French freestyle motocross star Brice Izzo in staging at the final Red Bull X-Fighters event of the year, one can’t help but wonder what goes through an FMX rider’s mind before a run. The risks involved with being competitive in the sport have never been higher, and when you factor in the pressure of performing for the judges, a firing squad of cameras and an entire stadium full of screaming Italians, it becomes clear just how much mental focus it takes to be competitive at the top levels of the sport. It’s hard to say for sure what Izzo is thinking here, but there’s a good chance that he has butterflies in his stomach the size of seagulls.

EnduroCross is an incredibly demanding sport that has all but blown up in popularity, and it now takes a lot more than just luck to be competitive in the pro class. Gone are the days when a motocross star like Ryan Hughes or John Dowd could show up to an EnduroCross and steal the show; now, a racer must have a well-rounded skill set just to have a shot at making the main event! For example, ten-time AMA National Trials Champion Geoff Aaron possesses incredible fitness, mind-blowing talent, superior speed and a sweet Christini all-wheel-drive motorcycle, yet it still took him five rounds to get on the top of the box in 2010. A virtual Swiss army knife of off-road skills, Aaron is one of several rock-solid racers that an EnduroCross rookie would have to beat in order to score a win.

Team Latvia didn’t bring home any trophies from the 2010 Motocross of Nations, but that’s not to say that MX2 racer Matiss Karro didn’t have anything to show for his efforts at the prestigious event. In addition to countless welts and bruises caused by eating roost for the majority of the weekend, the tough Latvian racer returned home with the knowledge that his moto scores were essential to the respectable 17th place overall finish earned by his team. While Team USA refused to even consider settling for second place, this racer endured extreme discomfort and obvious pain just to earn bragging rights for a country that most of us couldn’t find on a world map.

Young gun Thad Duvall is one of a handful of riders who is competing in both the Rekluse/AMA National Enduro Series and the GNCC Series, and he’s also one of the few racers who is capable of winning either event on any given weekend. With plenty of natural talent and an excellent mentor in off-road legend and AmPro/FMF/Yamaha team manager Randy Hawkins, Thad Duvall represents the rising class of hungry up-and-comers who are inheriting the off-road spotlight.

You’ve got to hand it to Chad Reed. It would have been much easier for the flashy Australian to celebrate the end of the 2011 supercross season by going home, putting his feet up and watching the outdoor nationals from the air-conditioned comfort of his palatial living room. Instead, Chad Reed spent considerable amounts of his own time, effort and money finding sufficient backing for his TwoTwo Motorsports team, and as soon as that was done he crammed in as much last-minute testing as possible before the season started. Remember what happened next? That’s right, Reed was a front-runner at every race, and in doing so he effectively silenced any naysayers who thought he couldn’t make it happen. Hard work pays off, kids—just look at Chad Reed.
